One million new voters listed: ECK

he Electoral Commission of Kenya yesterday was delighted at the last minute rush by voters to register and said it was confident the one million target would be met.

"We wanted a million new voters and I think we'll get them. We're happy. The outcome is encouraging," ECK commissioner Jack Tumwa said.

In Nakuru, more than 50,000 new voters had been registered by yesterday. Kericho registered 17,933 new voters, district deputy ECK coordinator Milka Chepkirui said, adding that 7,767 voters had been transferred in the district while 125 were deleted after they died.

Target of 51,000

In Siaya, ECK officials feared they would not meet their target. ECK officials had targeted 16,000 new voters, but only registered 8,000. In Busia, 13,936 people have registered as new voters compared to a target of 51,000. And in Kilifi, Bahari recorded 10,886 new voters while Kaloleni had 7,075 and Ganze, 3,710.

In Kisii 17,157 new voters were registered, while in Kuria, 10,000 new voters had been registered.

In Nyamira 21,000 new voters were listed, 15,000 of them in the three additional weeks ECK gave.

In Kakamega,27,376 new voters had been recorded, said coordinator Ben Ahinda.

Meru Central coordinator Jenifer Murogocho said there were 16,000 new voters in the three Meru constituencies.
